How would you improve Alakazam's movepool so that it fares better competitively?

It has to make sense thematically, so stuff like Fire Blast and Ice Beam is not allowed.

Alakazam isn't even bad nor has bad movepool. Why do you think it needs any buff? It's already got one of the best ability and amazing offensive stats. Mytsical Fire and Flash Cannon would make sense though.

Mystical Fire and Aura Sphere are great ideas as other Anons have said.

How about replacing Inner Focus with Neuroforce? (increases damage of super effective moves). It already has Magic Guard but would sure love Magic Bounce.

Magic Guard Life Orb is already the big reason Alakazam was still viable. Magic Bounce is neat but I don't think Zam is bulky enough to really abuse it, it'd just be a slightly better Espeon at the role.

Since megas are gone now, give Alakazam its mega stat. With first impression being a thing, I'd say give him around 125(+60) def as well so he doesn't get OHKOd everytime. Give him an exclusive move that is basically Photon Geyser + deals double damage against dark types. I'd say this would put him as a good RU or even a UU staple.

The only moves it could actually utilize in gen 7 are Fire Blast/Flamethrower, Thunderbolt and Earth Power. T-Bolt isn't better than Energy Ball imo, Fire Blast would be nice for all the damn steel types, and Earth Power would remove the miss chance vs. Heatran.
Only Earth Power makes sense thematically, because mega-Zam's psychic powers are just so huge that it can utilize the ground against its opponent.

Moonblast would be much better than Gleam.
Or Aura Sphere so it doesn't need to rely on Focus Miss. The lack of power is less important now that it is in line for Nasty Plot.
