The battles in that gen were horrible in general, graphics wise. Pseudo-3D with 2D sprites, most Pokemon's animations trying too hard to be cool and/or being unnaturally energetic, bad resolution, camera movements wasn't good either. Then there is the low HP music. Ewww.

I did, battles are much better there. The only flaw I can think of is Flying-types having bad idle stances in plenty cases.
