Sparklechildren, cheap MSPaint recolors pretending they're more than that, shallow characters visually overloaded with anything the author liked at that point in time, etc.
Anything that reminds him of that becomes cringe by association, and Garde recolors are one example of that. Doesn't matter if the actual OC has a plausible excuse for its discoloration or is written very well.
It's a little like how some people stay away from certain titles because the attached fanbase is notoriously cringe. Doesn't matter how good the actual source material is, they just can't enjoy it.
That's my best guess anyway.
