I mean 3d models.
Instead of Pokémon X & Y being the first main series handheld game with models, why wasn't it Diamond and Pearl?

The 3d capabilities of the DS weren't much better than the N64 so the models would've looked like shit

Also, if you compare SM64 to SM64DS, it's clear which one has more on-model character models.

Not to mention the DS had some pretty weird limitations to the amount of polygons that could be drawn in a scan line. The full 3d battles would have looked pretty bad with low poly possibly glitchy models.
