Isn't it extremely fucked up that Smogon only allows you to vote if you reach a certain ELO requirement?
It's basically equivalent to the literacy tests that pre-Civil Rights America used to stop blacks from voting.

It most definitely is. I propose that we allow even non-pokemon players and even people that have never played video games to be able to vote for Smogon bans. What's the use in having a competitive battle simulator if only the people that play competitively are allowed to have a say in it?

Its not actually based off elo retard, its based off GXE.

That said, it would honestly be better if it was just based off elo though. 40 games in 2 weeks is kind of a lot (I usually don't play 3 games a day normally), and thats assuming you get reqs first try. And a lot of players who have an educated opinion but can't be assed to get reqs usually end up just not giving a fuck and not voting. Or people just get sick of laddering and when they finally get reqs they vote ban because they got triggered and not because they actually think the thing is broken.

If they just let everyone above 1800 or so vote I feel like votes would have better participation and not feel like work.

I've been trying to qualify for the Mega Metagross suspect. I normally don't use Mega Metagross and I've been trying to ladder with it, and I haven't been able to make the reqs.
I have a 1540 elo and an 81% GXE on my normal account. My failure to ladder with Mega Metagross tells me that it's probably not banworthy, but from the suspect topic, it will comfortably be banned.
This exposes a flaw in smogon's suspect tests. You don't have to actually use the broken mon under suspect to vote in the test. I could ladder with Dracovish and then vote to ban Mega Metagross.
Even if players vote on broken mons, the council determines what to suspect. This means that suspect tests are only slightly more transparent than council bans.

Mostly you'd see it's broken from using all sorts of different teams and trying to teambuild.

If the mon was really warping the meta in an unhealthy way, teams would be naturally using and winning it. It's retarded to not use the mon, then vote to ban it. If you are winning against it without using it your ladder proves the mon isn't broken.

Not necessarily true.
For example, you can consistently win against Dracovish by having Seismitoad or another water immunity, but that doesn't mean Dracovish isn't broken or unhealthily warping the meta.

Regardless, making a new independent meta is possible, I remember there was an actual competetor for smogon in gen 5 with their own battle sim
