Pokemon has always been one gimmick. Like gen 1's safari zone. gen 2's bug catching and apricot balls.

Safari zone and Apricot balls arent gimmicks in the sense that they're meant to get people to buy the game. They're pretty much additional features for people who were already going to get the game.

I think the devs just like to make each region feel unique compared to others. So they leave certain things out of new gens, stuff to keep players coming back to the old games.
