How long will Pokémon last?
Will it be like Disney, McDonald's, and Coca Cola and just be 'there' forever? When will the last game or episode be? If ever?

it really seems too established to die, like disney yeah. by rehashing the same basic game variables they never exclude the newest generation of kids with complicated established lore, and by shifting their design philosophy they can always keep up with what kids think are cute and cool and avoid having to rely on monsters that are stuff their parents think are cool. but at the same time, being the same franchise even if all the games have in common is charizard and pikachu means that all parents will nostalgically buy their kids the games in hopes of bonding over the shared experience.

Probably once the mainline games and anime are done (whenever that will happen), my guess is they'll continue to sell pokemon merchandise and maybe keep releasing spinoff/ phone games or no games at all. but either way it sounds depressing yet miraculous to hear how pokemon will go out

i think surviving beyond pokemania was the big test, fads come and go but the fact that anyone still cared 1, 2, 5 years later is what makes it different than any other kid fad.

It's one of those things that's going to fade away and then resurge every few years, without ever losing its massive fanbase. Like with the '10s, it resurged around 2015 and again last year. When eyewear mounted AR and VR takes off in the next few years it'll no doubt see another wave of popularity.

Pokémon will continue to be released as individual generations until the advent of the holodeck. That's because unlike every other studio that needs every game they make sell a specific number of copies, Game Freak don't care about having a viable financial return, they run their studio and more with what an average Pokémon game nets them, they can afford to do shit like Gear Project, where it's literally making something they think is cool, not because they want/need it to sell.

Pokémon is too big to fail, and I think the dex cut proves that, alongside how the general quality of the games has been on the decline for years. They’d have to choose to end the franchise because it’s not going to die on its own, it sells too well

I almost wish the series would die. Some people argue that Pokemon has been dead for years, and others argue over when precisely it died, but I wish the series could die in the eyes of the public. When Fire Emblem was on its deathbed we got Awakening, which was far from perfect or what the franchise used to be, but it felt like a solid farewell to the series, disregarding how well it sold saving the series anyway. You could tell they put their all into the game because they really thought it was the end. To get a Pokemon game with that level of care put into it we'd need a similar scenario to occur, and I kind of want that to happen

I feel like Nintendo will completely merge with Game Freak, and Pokemon will become like another franchise within the mega-corporation’s repertoire. In the way that Disney has a lot of movie series which are relatively self contained, Nintendo might have a list of game series which are relatively self contained. In this way, Pokemon could both have a final game, but also never die out. The same way you can buy an Esmerelda funko pop at Hot Topic, despite Hunchback being old now, you might 20 years from now be able to buy a Lucario funko-equivalent, as part of some Nintendo collection.
