Snorlax was always a broken min-maxed piece of shit like Chansey since inception and there were no decent fighting moves until gen 4. You couldn't switch into it, you couldn't 1 hit KO it, and there's a big chance you'll be stunned by Body Slam spam. Just a bullshit overpowered mess.

Fighting movepool in gen 1 was utter trash which really helped Snorlax. Even something like Machamp was stuck with Submission.

If Snorlax had lovely kiss in ADV it would be A+ tier. But not having max ev's in everything really hurt. So did Spikes, Sandstorm, and Ttar/meta/skarm/gengar (used to be weak to lax) really stuffed it

The reason Snorlax is so truly great is the number of functions it can fill. On certain stall teams, it can be the only offense the team has. On other, more offensive teams, Snorlax will more often than not be one of the few things with defensive utility and staying power, usually along with Zapdos.

Plenty of people think he’s outright #1 at this point, really hard to kill between body slam immunity + reflect + rest while not being as passive as Chansey and getting far more opportunities to break open games than Tauros. He doesn’t have the turnaround factor of the bull but he can also just win you the game before the bull gets a chance to come in. Really just nitpicking though, the big 3 normals are all basically mandatory regardless

One thing that can't be forgotten is that Sleep Talk picking Rest would actually result in you gaining all of your HP again in Gen 2 so it was even more annoying to actually kill a Snorlax that went to sleep

It's not as much entire specific teams as it is that most teams are incredibly formulaic:

>Normal-resist with Whirlwind or Roar
>obligatory Spikes game slot
>secondary Snorlax check and support mon
>flavour/creativity slot

I just described 90% of all good GSC teams.

Lando is nowhere near gen 2 Snorlax.
Lando can at least be easily KO'd or forced out by an ice move and it has no reliable recovery. That's part of what makes it anti-cancer instead of cancer.

Gen 1 was one of the stall heaviest metas. PP wars were extremely common, since a ton of bulky pokemon had great recovery methods and offensive switch-ins could be easily punished with status before they could secure kills. And since there were no entry hazards, switching out had zero penalty.
