>>43598844HGSS were good games in their own right but for remakes they were awful. Besides being forced to run on the ugly, slow Gen IV engine (admittedly they look way better than DPPt), which isn't the games' fault, they manage to ruin a lot of the things I was looking forward to going off of how FRLG was done, and many of the new features are utterly useless. Props to having the new features in there and I'm always happy for content but there was a lot that didn't seem thought out. FRLG were a much more faithful remake that still added a large expansion to the map in the Sevii Islands, and there seemed to be more care put into it as far as updating movesets and teams and adjusting difficulty.
Off the top of my head, HGSS swung and missed on:
>music is mostly butchered, you can blame this on the DS soundfont if you want but the songs no longer sound like modernized Game Boy tracks, and the way they were arranged feels flat. GB Sounds became the definitive way to play.>Johto's biggest problem, the level curve, is only minorly adjusted; everyone still ends up with level 30s between Jasmine and Pryce and then it's level 40s until Lance>Kanto has some areas expanded but there's no real purpose to a larger Mt. Moon or Viridian Forest>the only "new" map area was that east of Cianwood City, which is pretty good but>easily the worst Safari Zone of all time even worse than the Great Marsh, at this point they shouldn't have bothered >Battle Frontier but it's just a paste of Platinum's instead of any new facilities like Trainer Tower in FRLG for example>following Pokemon are overrated and don't move the needle>many character designs were destroyed, most glaringly Misty, Sabrina and Karen>Lyra is an abomination and should never have replaced Kris>Ethan is a faggot and should never have replaced Gold
