It would take an entire shift in the way people digest Pokémon content, meaning a large, very large majority of money would have to come from sources other than merchandise. Showdown is a competitor to the games online components...sort of. The ranks and winning there doesn’t do a single thing to increase VGC rankings, it just fuels the actual sport. Plus anybody dedicating enough time in there is a fan of Pokémon and will buy merchandise like crazy. The real thing that I think they will crack down on is all the Poketubers using Pokémon designs to make merchandise in shirts and posters and all kinds of stuff.
