Judging by gamefreak and the virus going around, how long do you think gen 8's cycle will last? What's the promotional period for nugens?

Three years. They're only on the conceptualisation/engine-building phase of Gen IX's development and their greatest difficulties are not being able to scout a region and not being able to hold face-to-face meetings to discuss character/pokémon design and engine building.
I know you want to think the Gen/games will get delayed, but they just won't be, given the phase Game Freak were at with this Gen when Covid hit.

This. Pokemon goes for quantity, not quality. 3 years per gen will be always be what they do.
