This is definitely up there in "fuck you" rival battle placements. Best other one I can think of is Gen II and getting challenged as you go near the town gate.

Because exactly what you said, you don't have a way of realizing you're about to trigger a battle. You might be prepared for a Fisherman with three weak mons but not prepared for a boss battle.

This fight is easy as fuck and unless your running blindly you’ll see her before she battles you. How people equate this fighting to any degree of difficulty is beyond me

Obejectively one of the hardest rival battles, put in the middle of the road after numerous unskippable trainer battles with relatively high level mons, catch you before you can actually have the ability to truly stock up and most of the mon on the route are thunder or poison just to fuck with you. In the end the rival also as above avarage leveled mons with a relatively decent movepool but it's the developer fuck you that catches you off guard.

even in the speedrun i think there's more consistent strats nowdays than werster used back in 2013/14

Machop is catchable in Fiery Path, Route 112 and Jagged Path - all around Mt.Chimney, which is available only after beating Wattson.
Perhaps you're confusing Machop with Mawile?
