Gamefreak has a huge project in the works for the 9th Generation of Pokemon. They know that the fans are divided with each other, especially over Sword and Shield. Because of this, they want Gen 9 to feel like the Ultimate Pokemon game. The project is currently finishing up its Pre-Production phase and Gamefreak will soon start working on it. Here are some of the current plans of it:
>The Region will be based off of Australia, focusing on a more open-world type of game
>There are 10 gyms planned. 8 of these gyms can done in any order, with gyms 1 and 10 being done in a linear fashion
>No new gimmicks will be in the game. Gamefreak is hoping the open-world aspect of the game will be enough.
>There will be both random encounters and roaming Pokemon
>The National dex will be returning, but Masuda will make it clear that in the future, the National dex may not return due to just how many Pokemon are in the franchise.

That is all I currently know of the project. They are currently aiming for a 2023 release.
