I'm breeding the shit out of Pokémon Crystal. Not for shiny Pokémon, but for perfect DVs for the Battle Tower. So far, I have gotten 15/15/15/15 Snorlax and 1/15/15/15 Eevee, which work great. Snorlax is Snorlax, and Eevee is four and a half good Battle Tower Pokémon for the price of one.

It works with Gen 1, too. If you catch a Pokémon in Gen 1, you can know if it will be a shiny or not before you trade it to Gen 2, just by looking at its stats (and maybe leveling it up a few times, if it's low level).

By the way, when I bred the perfect DV Eevee, I had its parents set up so that any hatched females had a chance of perfect DVs apart from Attack, whereas the males had a 1/64 chance of being shiny. I eventually ended with not only the female 1/15/15/15 Eevee, but also a male with 15/10/10/10 (perfect Attack DV and the rest suitable for being shiny).

Interesting, I heard about it but never knew it actually worked like that. But there's an even easier way to get shinies, provided you can trade with gen I, thanks to the general glitchiness of those games:

>Trade a Shiny to gen I
>Teach Mimic to the shiny Pokémon you traded, preferably deleting its other moves
>Find a wild Ditto and mimic Transform
>Transform into the Ditto, which will then use Transform again while already being transformed
>Catch the Ditto. It will now have the DVs of the transformed Pokémon, which going by gen II mechanics means it will be shiny when traded to gen II
>Now you can breed almost any shiny

the only thing wrong with that one is that it suggests the 1/64 odds is a guaranteed flat rate if you breed a shiny with anything, but that's not the case. it varies by gender ratio. 1/64 is if the mother has shiny-viable defense (10) and special (2 or 10) DVs and the offspring has a 7/8 chance of being male
