One part Latias more closely resembling, and thus being a more direct reference to the early concept art that was later split into Blaziken and Lati@s

And probably one part GF toying with the idea of gendered legendaries, and a "legendary" pokemon that explicitly is a full species with many individuals
And (possibly deliberately) making swathes of 12 year olds feel things about QT Latias GF from Pokemon Heroes

the toga outfit in the original image makes me think of ancient greece or the atlantis myth
theres a bunch of references to an ancient civilisation in rubysapphire; baltoy/claydol, the sky pillar, the ancient battle between groudon and kyogre, the regis being manmade guardians, etc
i think there was a lot more to the plot than what we eventually got. I'm not suggesting that it was all good ideas, maybe it was cut for a good reason. And of course I may be overthinking things too

I can't help but wonder if the region as a whole may have been originally supposed to be Greek or something, this is unlikely because I don't think they'd make the third region foreign quite yet but the fact that Sootopolis is essentially a Greek island and the Greek outfit she's wearing make me wonder
