How did we go from the based Cheren and Bianca to an utterly awful character like Hugh? What went wrong?

She is the most boring of all rivals with the loser from gen 3 and the kalos friends (except shauna, even she is better than "let me waste your with my family issues" Bianca)

I recently replayed B2 and the main story is actually atrocious, it's not fun to play at all. I feel like BW2 get a lot of praise because of their post game, which is somewhat fair, but most of the game is shit.

You're right. I'm surprised nobody's made the connection before, but if BW is MGS2 (initially misunderstood sequel that takes the franchise in a different but no less satisfying direction) BW2 is MGS4 (sequel to the former that didn't need to exist, that only exists to sell raging fans what they apparently want).
