Anything pre-Pokemon Go is passable. It became blatantly obvious after that massive cash injection that the franchise was done for, not because of Gen VI being questionable, but because of how massive a cash bomb it was. It lost to its own success.

I think there are lots of people here that don't remember the summer of 2016 as well as they should. It was a worldwide phenomenon. Of course Game Freak were going to permanently alter the course of their game design to accommodate the hundreds of millions of new (and very young/too old to be skilled) fans whose only experience of the game came from a fucking mobileshit app.

Unova was when you started to see a lot of the cancer in modern pokemon. Cutscene after cutscene. Constant handholding. Over emphasis on plot instead of exploration. The whole region just being a linear circle.

They really didn't try though, they made a game that completely riffed off of Gen 1, and while it isn't as blatant pandering as 6/7/8, most of the dex are kanto wannabes

too bad it flopped, if gamefreak kept pushing unovamons, gen 5 might have been more of a flop if bw2 didn't allow olds mons from the start. Lets face it, every pokegame from 1998 to whenever pokemon dies will have kanto pandering. They tried your way and it failed. By the merit that gamefreak was able to repurposed unovamons and casualfags thinking their gen 8 ones should tell you how well unova's popularity is.
