Not sure if it's worse since I've never actually used Chikorita for a long amount of time, but gen 5 Serperior is not great at all. You're basically stuck with one decent moveset, and if you end up with physical/minus special EVs, you're stuck with Facade and a filler move.

For me it's that it doesn't feel like an starter, just like Serperior, and I love both of them. Your starter should be that mon you trust the most, at least lorewise, and those ultra-passive support starters just don't do that.

Never had an issue using meganium ingame. It gets early reflect and razor leaf and once it learns body slam it's set to take on anything that isnt steel.

Against gym leaders it holds it's own against whitney, chuck, jasmine's steelix, pryce's piloswine, and Claire's kingdra. It's not going to sweep teams but it doesnt go down easily either.

If you want to stomp everything then yes, it sucks ass, but in all fairness in G2 you don't have the movepool for the strategic game either, so yes, it isn't good, but it's still nice to use. IDK about G4 never used it there.

The trick is to not treat it as your "main" Pokemon, but to fill niches (statuses, screens, Grass STAB coverage).

It just runs into the issue that many games have, for 99% of the game status effects are unneeded and the few battles where they are useful are too far inbetween to justify an entire mon for them, especially in the Vanilla games.

The point isn't using them because you need to. The point isn't efficiency. The point is playing the game a different way for fun.
If all that mattered was playing as efficiently as possible, the majority of the Pokedex would just be pointless filler.

I started with RBY and I always loved Meganium best because for the longest time she was the only starter whose final stage didn't look like roided out boy-bait. I always loved Bulbasaur and Ivysaur but Venusaur looking like an obese toad suffering from gout.
