Giving you a choice slightly decreases the threat and tension of the elite four. Relatively speaking of course. For example. You always return to a central room in the choosing ones. It's cool, but compare that to being forced further and further into the league in choicelsss ones. You take on the members of the elite four based on their strength. Each of them is higher leveled then the last. Choiceless ones have higher levels as you advance. Then you fight the top dog before fighting the champion. One of the big issues for me is that the choosing ones all have the same level. Plus, you never know who's the strongest because that might invalidate your choices. Even if they did make it so that they change levels when you fought them in a different order, it wouldn't be as cool imo.
