Gen 2, when despite fixing a lot of the battle system, the difficulty and balance was fucked beyond repair, the addition of Kanto was so lauded and defended despite it being an empty shell, several concepts were just blatantly recycled, there were still 2 games + 1 more as a 'get it right' edition, etc. Everything truly awful and shitty about this franchise was continued in Gen 2 and then redone several times over.

You can say Gen 5 or 6 is when this series truly lost its charm, but Gen 2 was the start of darkness and when it was realized this series didn't need to grow to be successful.

HGSS and BW2 were the best games ever made, had tons of great features, postgame content, and an obviuos care put in from the developers. X and Y committed to soulless 3D models, easier games with less exploration, and gimmicks.

Engine speed isn't a problem with game design, it's a problem with Game Freak's shitty programming and optimization. It's like saying NPCs occasionally being loaded wrong in Gen I like on structures is a fault of the game design, but clearly that was never intentional.

RSE flopped, but HGSS regained the charm of the series. Same thing with BW and BW2.

The only possible answer I can see about what games started the downhill is XY or SM, anything before is wrong.

Gens one and two had the same damn thing, there was no reason to catch any of the birds dogs or Mewtwo other than wandering random dungeons. Gen 3 even gave us a third legendary to build on the lore of the region and the two box legends even before Emerald released

I gave gen 6 a pass thinking that they were just stretching their legs in using 3D. Then S/M happened. Then LGBT happened. 6 was a disappointing gen, 7 was a horrendous one.

I gave up on the franchise after US/UM only buying and playing it because my friend wanted me to keep playing the games with him (we've been getting the opposite version for the last 20 years). If not for that, Moon would've been my last game. We both pretty much agreed that the games were irredeemable shit and would never get better since GF can coast on brand name and nostalgia.

We dropped gen 8 and never looked back.

Easily BW, i wasn't sure why at the moment but it didn't feel as pokemon as the other games, i'll recongnize it had some very interesting ideas but it ended being something i can only remember as the dark and boring region filled with ugly pokemon desperately trying to be the older ones instead of being their own things (even tough for some reason many think they were great games).
I started to find hints of a not-so-great future since platinum because of the exclusive formes (that were different from Deoxys' in gen 3 because those were distributed between games and each game could still battle and trade no problem between each other).
Later when XY came along having a barren postgame and then ORAS repeated that incompatible formes business that started in gen 4 and kept being repeated since then, i knew for sure the future wasn't great.
Then gen 7 came doing the same thing and being an even easier game (borderline catering to the actually challenged) and, after seing the upscaled 3DS games that are gen 8 in action at the E3, i decided to stop buying.
Don't be surprised if you can only use the new pokemon and formes with other players that bought the DLC, i mean, we have 10 years of that happening so you know what the likely scenario would be...

Come on. Yellow isn't a perfect 3rd version example but it almost certainly did set the precedent for "we can release the game a third time with minimal changes and reshuffled distribution and they will buy".
I'm more willing to blame Gen 2 as they actively chose to continue the rocky mess Gen 1 was and do it again. Gen 1 set the low standards, Gen 2 hammered it in and they've been here ever since.
And you fuckers ate it up.

I don't think Southern Island was exclusive to the post-game either.

But it's fair to say that at the time, Ruby and Sapphire were massive steps down from Gen II in terms of post-game content, only being better than Gen I which simply had Cerulean Cave + Mewtwo. In comparison, FRLG had four additional post-game islands (not counting the two event ones) with quests and nearly a hundred additional Pokémon to obtain, along with an upgraded Elite Four. Diamond and Pearl had a ton of post-game content right from the get-go as well.

To this day, Ruby and Sapphire gave remained in second place for the "Smallest post-game award".

Not that I played any of those post-games (I didn't buy any of them except for X and I wasn't enjoying it enough to get to the end). But from my knowledge, SwSh at least has that post-game quest in addition to its Battle Tower, along with that Charmander you receive from Leon. I still think that RS shits all over SwSh, but I wouldn't say it has the more expansive post-game.

For LGPE, there are the Master Trainers (can you really count this as content?), Gym Leader and Elite Four rematches, and Red, Green, and Blue. But a Battle Tower seems like it would be worth more than most of that.

And didn't X and Y have the Battle Maison, the Looker quest with Emma/Essentia, and the Battle Chateau, along with one of the Legendary Birds, Mewtwo, and Zygarde?

It never captured the imagination of the general public and having most of the games routes be water routes/dive made it less attractive to the "general population"

Factor in Pokemon fatigue was setting in by the time Gen 3 was coming around. Also the leap to the GBA from GB is another thing to consider as by the time Gen 1/2 came out the hardware was nearly a decade old, most "normal people" didn't upgrade to the GBA or just didn't care for pokemon. Most people don't have a solid memory of Gen 3 but the fans of the series and those who grew up with it were satisfied with the games.

The series was FUCKED in Gen 6, X/Y were sound Pokemon games but it was clear that it wasn't a worthy successor to Gen 5 not was it the great leap forward for Pokemon in 3D. Also factor in the then highly anticipated, highly memed Gen 3 remakes not hitting the mark with the hardcore fans soured the majority of the fan base.

Gen 7 did not improve OR justify the 3D game engine, neither has Gen 8.

Gen 8 was when it truly set in that Pokemon was fucked. You could write off Gen 6 and 7 as them just coming to grips with 3D but Gen 8 proved they were only going to get worse.
