Gen one was garbage, gen 2 barely attempted to fix it. Gen 3 was the best thing to happen to the roster of pokemon and gen 4 improved it even more. Gens 5-8 can fuck off though

Types are literally just a bunch of lines of code. There is nothing to stop them from further improving on the system through retyping, rebalancing weaknesses/resistances or even adding/removing types.

I started with Gold, then got Ruby, then missed out on the rest of gen 3 and the begining of gen 4 (except for the anime) before getting Platinum, I then preorderd Heart Gold, White and BW2, if you were to ask me I'd say XY was the clear downfall of the franchise, there was some soul to it but it was a clear rush job.

Even a typical genwunner usually likes several gen 2 mons.
That said, I think you could probably cut a good fraction of the overall dex (maybe even a few in gen 1 like voltorb) and have something great leftover. There are good mons in every gen. I say this even though I tend to prefer the older ones.

Omega doesn't appeal to me at all. There's no real positive to it for me.

No it doesn't. Every Pokemon spinoff, with possibly the exception of Pokemon Go has a smaller budget than the mainline games. Many JRPG franchies are estatuc for 500k sales and Pokemon games by Game Freak sell 20x that amount, so do the math. We all know Pokemon games don't have massive budgets especially compared to large JRPG franchies like Final Fantasy (or even Persona).

I think they were going for several pokemon having "counterparts". Some of them would be split across different versions. And I suppose it would be weird if they only had 1 line for certain types (*cough cough* gengar, dragonite) so a little redundancy is somewhat forgivable

In gen 1 types were more like incidental properties rather than some sort of fundamental essence for each pokemon like they are now. The existence of types wasnt even a thing until later in development. Its not like they came up with a bunch of types and started designing pokemon for each type, they already the bulk of pokemon designed and later on assigned which properties that fit them.

They had a pokemon that's supposed to have somewhat intangible spirit-like qualities that no other pokemon has so let's reflect that through the gameplay. At the time its not like they could have just made the gastly line psychic/poison and give them a special ability that makes them immune to jabs and tackles so they achieved that effect through typing.

Nowadays they often just pick a type combo and design around that.

This so much. The type balance was horrifically bad in gen 1 and gen 2 only worsened it by introducing loads to already popular types and introducing barely any to rare types. Gen 3 finally making ghost and dragon into regular types was such a good thing, and dragons were still treated like powerful and rare mons they just actually fucking had at least a bit more variety.

You’re right, sadly. Gen IV is my favorite for several reasons but it has the weakest dex of the 2D games, and that’s without bringing up the lack of fire types or the fact that Platinum spited D/P players by making it nearly impossible to get the Pokemon required for crossgen evolutions (Electivire item 50% chance in Pearl, 5% in Platinum? Fuck you Gamefreak)
In my perfect Romhack, the game would consist of 50% Gen I Pokemon, 20% Gen II, 20% Gen III, and 10% of Gen IV (just for the few good designs like Gallade or Drifblim, and for crossgen Elite Four -tier Pokemon like Rhyperior or Magmortarg

as someone who likes gen 4 and 5 the best, and really enjoyed swsh, honestly this.

I've never had a problem with Delphox. My honest opinion is it pulls off the "anthropomorphic" look well with a recognizable theme that doesn't take too much away from a naturalistic design; and the nu-gen artstyle didn't touch it all that strongly.
You also have to understand what kitsune are to know why both of these are equally valid designs

Gen I is known for hybrid creatures anyway while new designs typically draw upon fewer influences with few references---and when they do, it's hamfisted like Obstagoon or severely poorly executed like the steel dragon.
