Was retconning real life animals out of existence a mistake, or a good move now that there are enough Pokemon to fill their spots?

I don't like the idea of eating Pokemon, or even really Pokemon eating each other. I'd rather leave a few regular animals in nature.

Besides I think it makes more sense. Regular non-Pokemon plants exist, presumably regular non-Pokemon microorganisms exist, why not regular animals?

Because regular animals wouldn't just BE food for Pokemon, they'd also be competing against Pokemon FOR food.

Considering how ridiculously powerful all Pokemon are, animals would quickly by driven to extinction.

Great Whites haven't driven every other species of shark on Earth extinct. There are still plenty of holes left in the ecosystem with no Pokemon to fill them. Am I just expected to believe that there are millions of undiscovered Pokemon in every region that we never see taking up all the same niches from the real world?
It would be much simpler to just leave regular animals in the lore - even if we never see them in-game.
