There is a drastic change in art-style through pokemon gens so the argument about nostalgia is false IMO. I think pokémon reached its bottom with the 5th gen where the designs are totally different from the rest. I think they recently tried to get back to the former style with few designs in gen8 that are successful such as Coriknight.
