I don't think they are THAT bad, it's just the fact that it was the first time two of the starters legitimately were horrendous designwise that fucked them up, plus coming right after gen 3 and 4 which had amazing starters design wise and all of them were dual type.
They ar definitely better than Incelroar and Projared
