Pokemon you like but never use in singleplayer because they aren't very viable for whatever reason. Xatu really got the shaft in move pool, at least in the earlier games.

why the fuck would I want to use psychic - one of the most powerful TMs just to cover Xatu's shitty level-up set? If it needs to rely on TMs just to get fucking STAB then it's level up pool is garbage.

Not that anon but back then pokemon weren't really supposed to have amazing level up movepools because it was expected you'd use TMs to aid their movesets. Like, did you think you were just intended to hoard the fucking TMs? Or save it for a powerful mon who probably didn't even need it? No, you were meant to just use them on whatever mon you felt needed it. Pokemon's level up movesets were meant as sort of a bare minimum type thing. That became less true in gen 3 and 4 tho, and it stopped even mattering in gen 5

That's kinda what I liked about Reborn is that it made you use Pokemon you normally wouldn't since the "best" ones are event-based and story-gated
So like I used Pachirisu, Emolga, and whatever even though I never used it in the main games

Xatu's movepool is great. Light Clay dual screens with Tailwind can Pretty much decide a game early on. Bonus if you use Magic Bounce.

Alternatively, you can make use of Air Slash, Psychic, Fly, Night shade, Root/Wish, etc.

Xatu is one of the only Psychic Pokemon (besides meme shit like Wobbuffet/Unown) from the first few gens that doesn't learn Psychic by level up at a low enough level to use in-game. And the others mostly get Psybeam instead, while Xato doesn't get ANY Psychic attack at all until it finally gets Psychic in its 60s
Even by old standards, its moveset is ass

Smeargle is a great catcher, if you have the patience to grind it to ridiculous levels, because otherwise it gets destroyed by everything.
Spceially because it can learn foresight + false swipe, much needed for ghost types.

Spore + return + hyper beam + whatever else as support might still help you out, but like you say those moves aren't easily copied. the only way would be if you traded for a weakmon that was copied by a ditto and attacked with those.
