USUM were actually great. Tutorials blow, but getting past that gives you some of the best gameplay the series has to offer.

It only seemed good because it was the first 3D game if you are not counting Colosseum/XD. Also megas were an interesting gimmick. Other than that, it was the first game with a rushed story and the start of lack of exploration.
