I think starters are an outdated concept that make everyone's playthrough all too similar for no good reason.
90% of the Dex has potential to be someone's favorite if they're just given to you as babby's 1st Pokémon

The games are continually aimed at pre-teen children anon. The starter pokémon are for them, remember you're not beholden to keep it in your team after you pick one to start the game.

It would be really neat, they do give them gimmick forms so I guess it wouldn't be out of the question. But it would have to be something that has basically the same chances of happening to not make players upset, like Day/Night,gender if they made the ratio 50/50, or ATK vs Sp.atk

Have it based on location. Not 2 seperate evolutions but separate forms that evolve depending on where in the region you are.

Example, Grovyle in the coniferous, northern half of a region evolves into standard Sceptile and in the more tropical southern half it evolves into a different form.
