As far as today's standards goes, gen 1 doesn't stands a chance against any other game in the series, but comparing the experience of playing any pokemon game at launch with playing Red back in the day when it came out?
Yeah, it was probably still pretty shit back then too because gen 1 is literally ridden with bugs and it literaly came out incomplete, and there were better games out there. But hey, it was a different time and what gen 1 did have was style and it was the first entry in the series and the beggining of the biggest IP to this day. The games themselves might not have stood the test of time, but I'd argue they deserve the praise and respect for the simple fact of setting the standards and expectations for pokemon.
Not to mention that back then, they actually made Pokemon. MAKE THEM out of sheer fucking willpower and imagination. There wasn't yet a precedent for what a Pokemon is so they actually had to come up with original stuff.
