Pokémon currently is at a resurgence, not a peak. Eventually, in 5-10 years it will lose nostalgia steam and main line games will not be produced further. They will most likely do a remake here or there and there will be spin offs and various media candies produced as a way to make easy cash on existing property.
Pokémon has trouble stratling the divide between nostalgiac 28-35 year old early gen fans and 10-20 year old new fans in the global market. GameFreak does an even worse job managing the franchise to please both.
It's a tough spot to be in as you have too many masters to serve. How do you innovate and not disrespect the loyal fan base who's been with you since day 1? How do run the same play over and over again and attract new players?
In short the series is exhausted and is currently being fueled by nostalgia in the global market. It will survive as a shadow of what it once was although it will remain a major player in Japan as they have a knack for remaining loyal to franchises spanning multiple generations.
