TLDR: Pokemon Z was almost certainly in development in 2015 but was cancelled for several probable reasons:
>Satoru Iwata died in July 2015
>Nintendo was in financial trouble from WiiU sales
>Nintendo/TPC made the judgment call (without Iwata) that skipping to gen7 was preferable to launching a third version for Pokemon's 20th anniversary in 2016

It's worth noting that 2015 was the first year since 1998 that no new Pokemon game was released in North America (which would have probably been Z if it were being developed in that timeframe).

Being fair, Megas have still been a consistent thing even if it isn't in the main games. Since the mainlines are taking mobakuso from GO now and that's reaching Gen Six within the next 6-8 months, and DLC having new Regis that are pretty on your face with the X/Y reference, I wouldn't necessarily write off Kalos ever. It's really a matter of when, not if.

The eyes for the new Regis are pretty much an X and a Y. Dragon/Dark/whatever Regi is pretty much Yveltal colored. The Electric Regi is more subtle about the color scheme but it matches Xerneas.

Honestly it pissed me off hardcore.

They hinted at the old Kalos that was destroyed. Literally half of the fucking map was open. Said in game about how "half of the pokemon were lost" back with the ancient war which made me feel better about the small dex count because, "Oh the next game will double it! That'd be huge and interesting for pokemon to do!".

Fuck them for dicking over Kalos that hard.

New Megas would be incredible especially considering Z moves and Dynamax are fucking retarded gimmicks. Even now you have a ton of pokemon that should have gotten Megas or Alola/Galar forms but got fucked over.

I want this kingly fucker to get its own game so damn bad. Bring everything together like we were promised so long ago. Have a story about the ancient war between Kalos and Galar(?), expand the Kalos region and its dex, add new mega evolutions and include every old one, have a visit or heavy references to Galar, deal with the whole Sundial/Moondial thing, etc. There were so many interesting things created and placed about that never got pulled together for a cool story/game. Z would be my top pick for the next game but obviously it’s not happening. Instead we’ll just get shitty DP remakes or Let’s Go 2 Johto.

My dream is to have Pokemon Z and Canon, one with Zygarde and the other with Eternatus. They are taking place in the past during a Galar-Kalos war 3000 years ago. You start either in Kalos in Z or Galar in Canon. Each nation has their Kings (AZ and his Brother for Z and Swordward and Shielbert ancestors for Canon). There is a lot of Mega vs Gigantamax cutscenes, something akin of castle siege instead of Gym Leaders. You can visit the opposite game post-completion (Change Pokemon League to Capital City Castle siege).

At least USUM had a game made around the exp share, didn't shove 4 pseudo rivals down your throat, didn't force a romance with a nigger loli and at least it had a likeable evil team.

Gen VI was a mistake and a blow GF has yet to recover from, and may never do so.
