All of these are additions that are now permanent

Gen 5 didn't have any major gameplay gimmicks besides little stuff like triple and rotational battles, which was more experimental than anything else.
Gen 7 added regional pokemon which appears to be a permanent addition
Gen 8 isn't done so we don't know what's going away.

Totally agree. Any idiot that claims Gen 5 adding hidden abilities is worth something when Gen 3 added the concept of abilities itself is deluded.
Although to be fair, you should've included "abilities" in the OP for Gen 3 to make that more apparent.

Not if Game Freak gave Ice and Psychic the buffs they deserved. Both of those types were only good for 2 generations, and only dominated comp when weather wars were banned, the real dominant strat of the gen.

Gen 6 added sky battles and inverse battles
Gen 7 added battle royals
None of those were counted either so it's fair. Personally, I feel like Inverse had the most potential. If it was pushed as heavily as doubles were in gen 3, I could see it becoming a staple.

Actually no. Regional variants imply that older Pokémon are not "done". Anything can be reinvented and made better/different.
With regional evolutions this concept went even deeper.

The real problem is that huge swaths of things GF introduces in any given title are just gone from the next. Think about how many different iterations of the bottom-screen alone we've seen with varying amounts of features.

Hidden abilities may just be abilities, but giving Drizzle and Drought to mons besides Kyogre and Groudon was a huge change to both the fanfic and official metas. Hidden abilities also mean you need to take into account 3 abilities instead of 2 when trying to figure out an opponent's set

I'll bite. Gen V didn't really add a 'big' change, but more a lot of QoL things.

>Running out of Repel let you automatically spray another
>Items can be moved directly between party members instead of to the bag first
>Pokemart is now inside the Pokecenter
>Register multiple items for quick access
>Running Shoes available immediately without the need of an item
> Elite 4 challenged in any order
>Weather, Current time, etc shown during battles
>Pokemon names no longer ALLCAPS
>Abilities now appear as an overlay in combat instead of Text you need to click through
>Buffs to old abilities and things to make them useful

Hidden Abilities gave more access to Abilities for Pokemon. Some new items that also helped other pokemon be viable.

Neat removed changes were,
