I like the simplicity, and how the lack of a shitty villain team (the best part about Rocket is how little they do, they're just some assholes that you occasionally need to steal an item from) means the League is the entire focus.
In every other Gen, you save the entire world then the League just feels like an afterthought.

BW is the only other one where the League felt like the climax of the game - since it tied the two together.

i like that you have access to pretty much every pokemon after koga (which lets you use surf). Koga can even be your third gym leader match if you want iirc.

There’s a lot of freedom to go where you want. The only significant block is Surf, most everything else you can access with just 2 badges.

Kanto's open-endedness is let down a bit by so much of it being fields containing the same handful of Pokemon, but it does help spice up playthroughs and teambuilding. You can get Eevee, Snorlax, the Hitmons, the Super Rod, the Safari Zone, and Seafoam Islands not too far apart from each other depending on what you want. Obviously some of those things are more work than others and you won't know all of that on your first try, but its a decent starting point a better open-ended map. Always look forward to kicking Team Rocket out of Silph Co. too.
