It was released in 2004 to reintroduce Kanto Pokemon due to the fact Gen 3 cut Kanto pokemon. Its simply a filler game to please genwunners. Nothing special but it is replayable zoomer.

The RSE engine is perfect though. Anything would work great on it and does as shown by all the romhacks. I do agree it doesn't have all the features and improvements other games have but that is why I like it. It's the perfect balance of all you need and nothing you don't. You can say the same thing of Gen 1 but those were also great games in their own right.

Well there's still the fame checker that was pretty fun. And the improved E4 that I'm fairly sure Emerald didn't have? And having a single rival instead of the horrible decision of splitting the rivalry into two characters making both feel underwhelming, never got why they did that.

RBY sprites have the most personality in the series. The pokemon looked monstrous and like abominations. It's appealing in its own way. Maybe it's an acquired taste. Some pokemon like Mewtwo actually looked their best in gen 1.

Gen 1's jank makes it for fun to play. I have nothing against FRLG it's just kind of boring.

I had to play Red and Blue to truly appreciate the sprites. I thought it was a meme and/or nostalgia but it's legit. The sprites look dynamic and great. Gen 3 neutered and sanitized all the sprites to look standard and basic. Even so I can still appreciate Gen 3 for the nice colors and raising the quality of all the sprites. Red and Blue sprites are a mixed bag, some are great but some are real bad.

Red and Blue played perfectly fine for me. They are not buggy like people mention. Yes they have a lot of bugs but play fine so I don't think think calling them buggy is appropriate. I think some of the stuff is just archaic and poorly implemented like pokemon and inventory management. All that stuff can be fixed to polish the game but as they stand the gameplay gets in the way of the fun. I was first on the boat looking to hate RB but I can't. I still take FRLG over them. It's not a fair comparison since they serve different purposes so I think it's personal preference more than anything.

Gen 2 Kanto is postgame fanservice and not the main bulk of the game. LGPE Kanto is watered down for literal babies.
FRLG to this day are still the best Kanto experience on the market.

To be honest, I like both RBY and FRLG equally. They both have pros and cons that almost completely separate themselves as two different sets of games.

Yeah, I heard the same. I guess I'm interested in seeing more Emerald romhacks because I'd love to see more development towards hacking parts of it that weren't possible before. I'd love to edit bits like the Pokemon battle animations and Frontier Brain teams
