Just adjust your team to weaknesses you've suffered from. Don't be afraid to switch moves or even whole mons. I just started playing Gen 8 OU last night and I've already hit 1400 elo.

don't overpredict, play safe and check the opponent sets as much as you can and you should get to 1500 without much problems. don't build your own teams, play with other's that fits your playstyle.
