Fair, but the standards in the anime are low as fuck as is. Even the canonical champions and strongest characters in the series just brute force the fuck out of their opponents and don't really use any complex strategies. Paul seems to be one of the few proactive characters that takes measures to counter Ash's team, for example. I only really remember Conway doing similar shit.

Cynthia is also still the Champion after you beat her in the games officially. There are multiple Champions, you just choose to stay and be the official one if you want, or leave. Like Red, he's a Champion, yet Lance is later Champion because Red pisses off, same reason Blue is the Viridian Gym Leader because Red turns it down too. Just as Ash doesn't have to stay and battle people in Alola for the rest of his days.

They both fought fair and square on the league with their Sinnoh teams betting everything on their training philosophies and no matter how much you wanna twist it or find a way to cope Ash won out in the end.

It didn't work like that in the anime. You literally just entered the league, and the trials/grand trials had nothing to do with getting in.
