Obviously whenever you have lots of people making OC 95% of it is gonna be trash, plus the healthy dose of autism present in the Sonic fandom makes it an easy target for 'le cringe XD' circles. But some fan-made content is genuinely good, and I don't think inspiring people to create is ever a bad thing (especially since most of them are kids and teenagers that you're laughing at).
When Sega fucks something up the Sonic fanbase has a tendency to shit all over them. And Sega seems to at least care about them, considering a lot of those people who started making fan works are now in charge of official products.
Look at the Pokemon fanbase on the other hand. When do they ever create anything? They just consume like vultures. If Gamefreak fuck something up there's no outrage, just consume. Someone makes a cool fakemon? No fuck that just consume.
Somehow despite the entire appeal of the franchise being kids self-inserting into the anime, Pokemon never seemed to inspire the same level of creativity.
