>>43744656I get that a lot of them are weaker, early game moves, but I don't really understand why they were cut even if they were filler. Some of them are pretty decent coverage for the early and mid games and some were overall great even if they were technically unviable in comp. For example Joltik and Galvantula in Gens V-VII got Signal Beam in their level up movepool in the mid-game therefore allowing them to use their STAB efficiently, but thanks to that move being culled, it's absolutely cucked in terms of Bug coverage in general unless you dick around for a Bug type TR or wait until the fucking 50s to naturally get Bug Buzz.
Not only that but they cut a lot of shit that actually is viable such as Return/Frustration, Pursuit, and Hidden Power, all of which have important pieces to previous metagames.
Return and Frustration were integral for Physical attackers with relatively little coverage, and for Normal type Pokemon it was its most reliable STAB, but now thanks to its culling most Normal types in Swoosh have to rely on recoil moves like Take Down/Double Edge to even do high damage or they have to settle with the lower powered Body Slam to get stuff done. While Body Slam doesn't have recoil and has the Para chance, it's not going to guarantee some potentially integral damage rolls.
Pursuit was a handle for the trapping metagame and held many roles for several Pokemon. It basically punished predicted switching, and can help a team to break down more fat and stall based teams which rely on switching into other walls to keep holding ground. It wasn't broken fundamentally as well since its reliance on prediction made it a risky move that either resulted in a good reward or poor damage output.
Hidden Power was also important due to the addition it had to Special Attackers with poor movepools. Even with the inclusion of TRs, it's still fundamentally worse due to the lack of variation a mon can have for coverage based on its respective meta.
