they wanted to cram too much into too little of a design space. they could have ditched their flying types instead, but surely they would then have to have levitate as their abilities, right? if they gave them steelworker-type abilities instead we would have the same issue, which is that each of the trio would essentially have to sacrifice their ability slots. it's just too much.

What the fuck do you mean sacrifice? Steelworker is an amazing ability and better than the abilities they actually got if it applied to their old typings. It's essentially triple STAB. Flying, Dark and Fire; Flying, Fighting and Electric; Flying, Ice and Psychic.

Yeah, Hiei is recognized as a sort of fire demon because of his fire demon father, but he learns to wield darkness flames rather than normal ones. That's not too different from Moltres traditionally just being a flaming bird and then sometimes turning to the dark side.
