Before he was just this weird electric phantom, with an eerie encounter making the plasma poltergeist's introduction memorable.
I was never sure how I felt about his gimmick when it was introduced in Platinum; It wasn't bad, but some of the designs were a little silly for my taste - but not outright bad designs. And those new forms definitely gave Rotom more use and variety in battle.
At this point though, he's become such a shill-mon. He's became just as bad as Omochao from Sonic is, being our new tutorial buddy that gets to make sure we're on the right track or understand everything that's right in front of us. Honestly, they didn't even need to force Rotom into that position; they could have just incorporated Dexter from the Anime and have your new Smart Phone/Pokedex have similar AI; It'd make a lot more sense than converting a Pokemon into a talking battery. And it's just getting worse because that's become Rotom's whole identity now and it's appearing that's going to be his major use from now on.
I was so thankful when Pokemon Masters had a fucking Porygon phone, and a stylized one at that! That adds so much more to the atmosphere as an Easter Egg (that also makes sense and is believable in-world) than every new major electronic you get just having Rotoms's face plastered on it. I wouldn't mind more key items designs being based on Pokemon, I just don't want it to 'be' a Pokemon or have that become the Pokemon's entire identity.
But I guess money has to money. Can't wait for the DP remakes where you get a Rotom-Dex at the beginning and it's some post-game side quest to find your Rotom-Dex's brother or something, removing the charm of the original encounter.
