When the Amie pics leaked, he became an instant fave of mine, but when i used him in game, he flat out became my favorite. I assumed i would be alone in that opinion and that Greninja would be the hipster pick because 8 years ago hardly anyone liked frogs (including me desu) and because i assumed that the tonguescarf (which i found to be absolute genius and gross, just how i like it) would be a pleb filter.
So when the game released and all my friends expressed regret over picking Fennekin or Chespin when they saw Froakie's Final Evo, i was surprised. Then it turned out to be an almost unanimous consensus all over the internet with it winning all those polls early on and many calling it one of the All-Time best Pokemon, which pretty much left me floored as i wasn't expecting him to get such public reception at all. He was even my "impossible" Smash Bros dream addition, so i still consider his reveal trailer to be 2nd most hype trailer only behind the OG Brawl trailer that revealed half of the Newcomers and ended it with FUCKING SNAKE. It was amazing how despite such an amazing first year, he actually kept becoming even more popular as time went on because of the Anime and shit. Watching him being elected as the Worldwide favorite Pokemon this year is honestly amazing. First time i see a Fantastic Pokemon design become as popular as it deserves. Why did people like it so much? I still don't know, but i'm glad it happened
