I know some people think Poliwrath looks generic, but I kinda wish Politoed didn't deviate from this in such a ridiculous way.

Are Politoed and Tyranitar the most extreme changes from their previous evolution?

Politoed follows proper frog metamorphosis, it fits thematically/logitcally.
Tyranitars head and limbs pop out from Pupitar; the black spots on Tyranitar's chest are where the eyes are on Pupitar.

At least those are logical. Pupitar is a pupe (same as Cascoon or Kakuna or whatever you want), and Politoed is a toad after all.

That's whole theme of the line:
LARVitar -> PUPitar -> Tyranitar
The little larva eats a mountain and becomes a pupa, then hatches into a giant version of the larva. The Mega even has the same color scheme as Larvitar
