Someone compared all of Ash's pokemon prior to his Alola league victory and I'm pretty sure that Snorlax is his best longstanding pokemon he's ever had. Has an amazing win/loss ratio for all the battles it fought and Ash still owns it.

Goodra never lost a battle and Greninja was good, but Ash released both of them.

You people don't realise that Charizard was useful in the strongest battles, where his other Pokemon couldn't win. While win/loss ratio is important, Ash could count on Charizard when he needed him the most.

me. Not my overall fave but dragons are cool and it was my first starter, I have a soft spot. Definitely prefer it to the other over-promoted pokemon like Eevee and Mewtwo.

The issue with Charizard is that it is exceptionally arrogant and looks down on what appears to be weaker opponents. Paras got enough courage and was scared out of its wits to harm Charmeleon, who was trying to roast it alive while putting itself in danger by just attacking it from the front. And Ash's Chikorita was very gutsy and determined to win no matter what the cost, and it is this quality that made Ash want to catch her in the first place.

You wouldn't understand, Charizard is the ultimate company man. He's got the look, he's got the height, he even has good-looking, high impact l finishers. His job is go over the vanilla midgets in the undercard and look good look just good enough to the point where he can put the next big guy or main eventer over and make it look believable, brother. He's always kept in a good enough spot on the card and is played well, plus he never needs to be burdened by the rigorous schedule that is top be expected by the stars at the top of the card. Char-man might just be one of the greatest midcarders of all time, definitely has himself a guaranteed spot in the HoF when he retires.

A good pokemon isn't one with a good win/loss ratio, its one the writers can either give off the wall tactics or abilities, or great "filler" episodes to use their abilities on odd ways, that were the absolute kino of gen 1, the orange islands, and gen 2.
Snorlax was chief among these, with shit like the Sumo competition, or hell, even the episode where it got caught, but even things like Charizard shooting a flamethrower out of its tail against Faulkner, or that hype as shit toboggan episode gave personality, fluff, and hype to the pokemon cast.

Charmeleon/Charizard WAS tougher than most of Ash's team, but not by much.
Its arrogance was only somewhat deserved, and half the time it deigned to fight a weakling, it got bodied anyways.
