I got around 200 candies last time I tried. You could encounter Meltan for an hour at a high spawn rate. And you can do it every 3 days. Not sure if there was an event, but it isn't hard to get one of you have the means.

I get the feeling that they just scrapped G-Max Melmetal from ever being released...the pokedex on Home used to have Melmetal’s G-Max form but now it's gone...so yeah probably not ever gonna get released I guess...
