VGC is the official format of competitive Pokemon, with LAN tournaments that have cash prizes and more. The meta is generally very dynamic and balanced this year, with a new flavor of the month seemingly every month or so. LAN tournaments are on hiatus during the pandemic, online tournaments happen on cartridge every month or so.

I see this faggot from time to time on my feed, usually sucks his own dick about being the world champion or something, never really watched him. i've been meaning to get into VGC for a while and figured id start by watching some poketubers who know their stuff. like i said, his titles go on about being world champion. is he a good start? what are some agreed-on good players i could look into, if not?

If you want to get into the format with someone less obnoxious but still good, CybertronVGC is probably your go to. He has team building and general "baby's first VGC" guides.

But I'd recommend Cybertron, James Beak, and EakesTV first since they have a lot of scene experience and know what they're talking about. The vid you posted might be the most up-to-date besides Wolfey's though.

Use a rental / pokepaste of an established team to get a feel for the format or to just have fun with it until the DLC comes out.

If there's a particular Pokemon you'd like to use, like for example Riachu, go to trainertower.com or victoryroadvgc.com and search for a team with Riachu. Keep in mind, while there is a wide selection of viable Pokemon in the metagame right now, you're not going to find many teams that utilize a pokemon like Sudowoodo.

Tier list of viable Pokemon.

Pokemon S-C have strong enough viability to be considered in most team building situations depending on what you need.
D are very very niche but you might be able to make them work in a specific team.
Meme are Pokemon people try to make work, but they usually just don't work.

Wolfey's videos are good when he's actually playing the game. You can learn about common and uncommon threats. You can see how he approaches matches (things like figuring out which Pokemon on your team could sweep their team once a certain check or counter is gone).

Very bulky, strong, good movepool, very slow (good for Trick Room), good ability, well optimized stat spread, and good typing.

Early on in the format it was arguably A Tier. Major threat.

Sure, but some things such as Follow Me and Trick Room (as a way to undo enemy TR) are very very very useful for any team. And the 2 S-tier Pokemon are the best at that.

You use it to conserve hits on your main sweepers, or stop status from hitting something important. One of the main uses is making sure your trick room user can get trick room up by using it with a focus sash holder (Preferably Indeenee-F because of Psychic Terrain)

They aren't ordered best-worst from left to right, that'd be splitting hairs. You could argue Duraludon is much better and more versatile though. Coalossal was big for a little while but he has died down as people have figured out how to effectively deal with it. But yes it's still a great pokemon and a big threat.

Also Shedninja isn't good right now true, but Shedninja is always worth accounting for if the meta becomes stale and there isn't commonly coverage to deal with it. Also, there are some cool cheese strats I've seen with Wonder Guard skill swap gimmicks that you can build around. Is it good? No. Does it have a very slight streak of viability? Yes, under specific circumstances.

Sacrifice 4th moves that don't get as much usage for Protect, specifically on Duraludon and Hawlucha. Both are frail against poor matchups, and having Protect can be the difference between winning and losing a lot of games.

I get the idea behind Dark Pulse on Duraludon (for max darkness's spdef debuff), and Fire Punch on Hawlucha (for buffed power in sun or to set sun for Coal). But you will get way more millage out of Protect, for sure.

As another poster said, consider Acrobatics. I get that you might not be bringing Rillaboom into every matchup, so maybe you want Brave Bird. It's fine.

Hydro Cannon over Energy Ball might be worth it. I know, 3 water moves, but they each have their own purpose. Hydro Cannon hits HARD and gives you a SpAtt water STAB that doesn't rely on Liquid Voice (in case you need to Dynamax her, or vs Weezing). Water + Fairy is good coverage on it's own. You already have 2 other pokemon with strong Grass coverage.

Actually, AV Primarina with 3 Water moves is really similar to the popular AV Conk set with 3 fighting moves.

Conk often has Mach Punch (priority), Drain Punch (good neutral damage), and Close Combat (the "nuke" button). 3 Water AV Primarina works the same way basically.

I ran Vacuum Wave on a Hitmontop for self-proc on a Lapras team. It came in handy occasionally.

No, neither is ideal but Aqua Jet isn't that bad on Prim really.

It's VGC, you can get away with a lot of off-the-wall shit but that doesn't make it good. Bingjie Wang ran a team built around Siesmitoad at his last regional. Toxtricity is a meme in the format unfortunately. He needs an ungodly amount of support to make work. He's kind of like Lucario -- good on paper, shit in practice, but they're popular pokemon so people force them.

I'm sorry, I really like Toxtricity but it's not that good. I guess meme is a hot take, but he's D at best, nowhere near C tier.

Hawlucha is decent. It can't compete with Conk as the defacto Fighting type, but with Rillaboom's Grassy Surge legal now, it's worth digging out the old Unburden sets to see how they work in this meta. You could do worse.

Clefable isn't even as good as her pre-evo Clefairy in the format. Singles mons don't always do well in doubles formats. Clefable is completely outclassed by Togekiss in every way, and Clefairy's ability Friend Guard is incredible.

The post DLC meta is looking kind of grim in general, it’s rather likely we will see some kind of CHALK type team centered around Dragapult, Excadrill, Togekiss and Amoon dominate the meta from now on.

Mudsdale has 2 great abilities with Own Tempo which prevents Intimidate debuffs and can also be used to self-swagger for a quick +2 attack buff, and then Stamina, which can also be really strong.

Mudsdale has a great movepool and amazing bulk. He's commonly run with Assault Vest and he's a common Dynamax target. All his common max moves buff his defenses and he can set sand with Max Rockfall.

Early on in the format, a very common team core was Arcanine - Grimmsnarl - Mudsdale and it was devastating. Grimm-Arcanine would lead, Grimmsnarl would set dual screens while Arcanine set Safeguard and used Snarl to debuff the enemy. On turn 3, you would send in Arcanine for Mudsdale and use Swagger on your own Mudsdale. It'd make Mudsdale unkillable and he'd hit like a truck. Eventually, people found ways to deal with it but Mudsdale is still a good pokemon.

Amoonguss thrives just as much setting up and being in Trick Room as it does being a check to it. Trick Room in general this gen got a lot of indirect buffs through new balance changes and mechanics, which is why it's pretty good now. Amoonguss alone would be the death of TR.

Seismitoad and Lucario are decent mons though? Toad is not used as much as it should since Rain is quite hard to use in the current format, but its an equivalent of Excadrill for those kinds of teams. Lucario has niche use as a Follow Me user and Justified beatstick.

Tox isnt that hard to build around, especially now with lots of teams running Primarina/Milotic and Sand Rush Excadrill teams not really being a thing anymore. If you dont have a Ground move chances are Toxtricity doesnt care about your existance. Its great as a secondary/coverage attacker that doesnt rely on Dynamax to do damage. Specs Overdrive in particular hits stupidly hard. Putting it under Pokemon that have 0 practical use, like half the shit you put in D and arguably some mons in C (fucking Perrserker, really? Also, why are both of the Draco fossils down here?) is downright ignorant.

Regardless, Amoonguss is fine. Even without a good Spore user, the format has had it's fair share of sleep spammers and people have found a way. Venusaur's sleep spam brought Alcremie into the meta to begin with, and Alcremie should fare very well against Amoonguss. I for one welcome our new cream overlord.

Lucario Justified cheese is literally only shit you see in Pokeball tier on cart and 1000-1200 on showdown ladder. Arcanine is better in that niche to begin with. Lucario is a mon again that seems good on paper, but he's actually a directionless pokemon with no niche to speak of.

Look you can nitpick shit in D-tier like some asshat, but the fact is that shit doesn't see play for a good reason. They're niche.

I don't have a good Oranguru team handy, but Oranguru's biggest gimmick is Instruct. It basically makes a partner Pokemon attack twice. This is especially powerful with strong spread attackers, such as Torkoal, Primarina, Sylveon, TTar, Rhyperior, Jellicent, and more. I've honestly had pretty weak results with Rillaboom. Drum Beat slowing people down means jackshit when 50% of teams I meet are Trick Room, Fake Out whiffs a fair amount of time because people are carrying with them switch-in psychic surge indeedee or because the guy Fake Out was also the guy that was gonna Dynamax turn 1. I might go back to just running Venusaur who atleast can boost the SpA of a Torkoal supporting him in case of Trick Room.

Rillaboom is really fucking good but nobody has built a good Grassy Terrain abuse team. Drum Beating is a great STAB move that doubles as speed control. He gets Fake Out, Knock Off, and has high bulk to run an AV set.

He's 100% good and will be relevant but right now the sauce is Cinderace because offensive weapons like this always become the focal point of the meta at first. Same thing happened with Dragapult. People will figure out something to mitigate Cinderace's effectiveness (maybe it's honestly just Arcanine and Rotom-W?).

My only concern is that since Regionals and other events are cancelled, you aren't going to see someone break the standards of the meta and shift it like what happened at every other regional. I promise, if there was a regional tomorrow, there would be someone who found a way to shit in Cinderace and they would win it or at least top cut.

I really think Rillaboom would do well on a team built around bulk with multiple Fake Out users to just spam debuffs, Knock Off and Fake Outs. Incineroar, Hitmontop, Arcanine, and Raichu. Grassy Terrain also halves damage from Bulldoze and Earthquake which could benefit some partners.

Also if you're running a Focus Sash on Abomasnow (a good pick because you get STAB grass which is important for your weaknesses), you ought to run a Quiet natured one for the trick room benefit and so that you can use Wood Hammer. Also while Belly Drum Eiscue is good, you are also relying on Hail to not fuck up your speed. Screens might be an overall better choice as opposed to Aurora Veil due to this.

Manectric, Togedemaru or Raichu since Lightning Rod for your team is almost a necessity at this point if you really are set to keep these 5.
Manectric has access to Flamethrower and Snarl for some nice coverage and utility, has huge Speed and SpA but is frail and adds another special attacker which can be risky if you have to deal with Snarl abusers.
On the other hand, Togedemaru, with access to Fake Out, Nuzzle or Encore for example, is really good to help against some fairies since you are also weak to them I know it well, I created a few Machamp teams, Primarina is always a pain to deal with, and Gyarados is up there too for annoyance so an Electric/Steel type is nice to have for these.
Raichu is nice too in general if you prefer it but I never saw how it could help in these teams as much as the other two.
Also, you need to have Taunt somewhere to shut TR, Setups and Sleep abuse attempts so I hope your Grimmsnarl has it to help with that. And like anon above said, Pelipper is really not that great of a Pokemon but I guess it could work if you cover your options well though I've seen Rain Dance Sableye being used before and it would help support the team with moves like Quash, Will O Wisp, Taunt, Fake Out and Knock Off to name a few, but you will need a really good answer to Fairies with it instead. Ferrothorn would also be a really good Pokemon to answer most issues if you had not 3 Pokemon destroyed by Electric types it could work well paired with Rain Dance Sableye instead of Pelipper though, LR wouldn't be as necessary. Excadrill could have been interesting too but it feels too frail for your team to use.

Since you have Screens, you don't need Incineroar as much I feel like but it's never a bad pick either. For example, one of my recent team actually consist of Machamp, Togekiss, Incineroar, Manectric/Togedemaru (both works here), Intelleon and Whimsicott. Just did 8 matches tonight and lost only one kinda close because Primarina, as always, and some bad choices to deal with it.
Don't forget about Sableye either, it could be worth trying if you want to keep rain around, Ferro could greatly appreciate Quash support outside of TR.

I had a friend's team that abused of Gravity and had to make some changes to make it viable because it had some bad issues one was, she loves Toxtricity but it was too frail for the team and had no good support to function properly + the team lacked another decent/bulky enough attacker which could function outside of the gimmick sometimes : this kind of team is hard to build if you are not familiar with Teambuilding and if you are not the kind who enjoys using this type of teams.
What Pokemon do you have in it? How do you use it normally? Are you just trying to force the gimmick and lose, or are you trying to do other stuff sometimes and still lose when the matchup isn't great if you were to just use the main gimmick?

Perish Song, Encore, Haze, Hypnosis, Scald spam, Icy Wind for speed control, and Helping Hand. It'll probably get more moves as well from TRs.
Politoad is very bulky with investment, and fills the role of a bulky support Pokemon who can come in and set Rain while also helping his Rain partner sweep with a bevy of support moves. He has been a mainstay of Rain teams in VGC since 2012.

Pelliper is extremely frail and needs Focus Sash to do anything. It's more offensive than Politoad and has Tailwind, but anyone who has used Pelliper will tell you that it's a liability. So much of a liability that most Rain teams would run Sableye instead as their rain setter, yikes.

My Old team was doing "OK" which was a venusar+Torkoal Lead and Trickroom Dusckops and Conkledurr. (sometimes I switch up)

My streak ended the second the HA starters was legal as I have no way of dealing with Rillaboom or cinderace. I don't have any trained up pokemon and I've resorted to Genning Though I'm not proud of it. Now I'm trying to make a team that could at least win 3 matches (I'm Halfway through Ultraball) ideally before the DLC hits. (when the DLC hits we'll all have a fresh start) I was thinking of something with Ttar+Rillaboom though I'm not sure what else I should add.

You say that but non-ability rain setters can actually get the job done. Dedicating a switch-in to delete the weather can be risky, since Torkoal is probably in the top 10 slowest Pokemon it'd be suicide to lead your Drizzle setter.

I've seen alot of the VGC players on twitch complain like never before this season. I kinda wish Dynamaxing was I don't know more restricted? At least with Megas you had to hold an item, and Z-moves were the same but you only could use it one turn. This season it doesn't even matter if you turn-1 Dynamax or not. Snowballing happens too quickly it seems and there's little room for mistakes or chances to recover.

It's even worse that I'm a ribbon collector and I was pretty much forced to learn VGC this year.

See on one hand I have to disagree on dmaxing principals. Yes it seems like you can pop whenever makes reading and next moves quite hard, but I hated how centralizing megas were gen 6/7. If you didnt run Kang/mence/Mawhile/Meta you were gimping yourself, which restricted teams a fair bit. Here anyone can be the maxer of choice, or that maxer can be different each round. Really the options are so vast here, and I think it causes the meta to be a lot healthier. Sure I struggle to cope with WP combos but isn't that more my fault for not knowing all the priority move users are that can pull off a free Shadow Sneak?
I honestly think Dmaxing is much more fair but that doesn't mean I don't struggle with it.

Maybe Gamefreak is trying to get more people to play Pokemon Competitive and have been adding unbalanced Gimmicks so newcomers can jump in and not have to worry about the "technicals" of super-effective moves and predicting Pre-Gen6.

With Double-HP of Dynamax and powerful Z-moves, you're pretty much punished for doing super effective moves which is the whole point of Pokemon.

Yeah, you're not proving any points here anon. If you can sit there and think that Dynamax is completely balanced then there's no point in having this conversation with you. Like I said, Gamefreak is going to add another dumb gimmick and you'll be saying the same thing over and over again. I'm not saying Dynamax is bad, I just wish it was more balanced. Perhaps some sort of downside for gaining double HP AND Zmoves for three turns that can buff your allies (plus you can't be fazed out without some quick attack gimmick). I'm not sure how anyone could think that is balanced.

Personally, I'd like it if Items didn't work when you Dynamax. Choice Items already don't already. Priority into an ally to activate WP then Dynamaxing would then have some sort of risk instead of gaining all that power right way with no downside and little to stop it.

Not anon but unless you cut the HP to a 1.5 bonus or change items activation, I don't see how Dynamax is that busted or unbalanced. Without WP being abused, I don't see a lot of mons being that overpowered with it. Sure something like Durant looks terrible to fight when Dymaxed with so much raw power, but it's normally an exception more that a rule if we don't take WP into account still. It's not perfect but, for the first time, I'm enjoying a gimmick compared to past generations where Megas and Z-moves were not really as fun to work with.
No one is saying Dynamax is perfect or sucking GF toes by saying every gimmick they have done is perfect, Dynamax is just closer to creating a balanced environment than what we had before. Yes, some issues are present and more will come with the DLC and Legendaries, but GF could have and still could make so it won't happen, though it will. Making so the Dynamax candies are not taken into account in competitive matches would have been an easy implementation and help I'm sure that balance issue. Making Legendaries not able to Dynamax in competitive matches too.

Life Orb/Specs Dragapult Hex is so busted in that case, I tried it and it's really good and could pair well with Toxtricity. You don't want to be double weak to Ground anyway. Sun teams for example usually carry Torkoal and Whimsicott. Rain teams will often carry Sableye and Pelliper, but Torkoal is an amazing Trick Room sweeper and strong ass Pokemon, meanwhile Pelliper is a complete liability.

I actually think dynamax will prove to be a more balanced mechanic as more Pokemon are added. Part of the reason it's so powerful right now is because of a few specific Pokemon that don't have many defensive answers, like Dragapult, rather than the mechanic itself being busted. Porygon2 for example will completely fuck the Dragapult/ghost spam meta and in general will easily wall dynamax mons since fighting has weak max moves. We need Haze Fini too.

So it depends on what you want to do with it. Having both moves isn't bad in itself but if you Dynamax it a lot, you might want to go for coverage instead.
Since it's more of a mix between utility, with Fake Out and Drum Beating, and raw damage from what I see, unless you have good coverage in the back for other mons and/or Milotic/Primarina are big threats to your team, you don't really need Wood Hammer as much and could go for something else.
Depends on your spread too, but you are on the right track at least.
As far as speed goes, 141 speed makes you outspeed a lot of things like full speed Tox or Adamant Exca (147 if you want to outspeed Gyara too, 144/145 for Diggersby/Vanilluxe). It really depends on what you need to outspeed, what you struggle against. If you don't care that much about these above, you can go 125 to outspeed full speed TTar or 127 for 252EV speed Seismitoad/Dreadnaw.

The point was to show that Drum Beating can still be decently powerful if he wanted to use Rill more as a support while the difference when being Dynamaxed isn't enough to just keep Wood Hammer over more coverage if he Dynamaxed it a lot but wanted support and power still when not. The opposite can be said if he wanted more power and if these Pokemon were a threat, hence my paragraph on what speed he could use in that case.
In the end, it all depends on the team in the end and what you want to do with it, both moves are viable and good.

If they think you have Fake Out on one of your leads, the read is pretty simple. They will fake out your fake out user and blow it up. Sableye is actually very good vs these teams because it's a ghost with Fake Out. Ghosts are problematic leads for most of these teams since Liepard can't use Fake Out. Mimikyu with Taunt is a pain in the ass as well. Liepard often carries Foul Play or even sometimes Sucker Punch, but as long as you can stop it from doing it's job and make them have a bad turn 1, you can win.

Another big and easy counter to do is to try to use a move that has priority between Max Guard and Copycat. Follow Me and Ally Switch will cause Liepard to copycat those moves. A faster Prankster user like Whimsicott will also cause it to copycat Whimsicott's moves. You can even spam Fake Out after turn 1 and it will just cause Copycat to fail. If you know priority mechanics well, you can reliably beat it with common team options.

I used a Copycat TR team to hit top 500 on cart and showdown before Wolfey made the strat big. He used Reuniclus, but Hatterene is just better because of Magic Bounce and her speed tier. Also Hatt is just a stupidly strong TR sweeper. The weakness of the strat is if the Copycat TR doesn't work or you can't get Trick Room up, you just lose most of the time.

I'm not sure what's more pathetic or cringe, that he slaps WORLD CHAMP on every place he can anywhere he goes, that he completely sold out and 90% of his content now is shameless clickbait and reaction videos with basedface thumbnail you see from the lowest of the low PokeTubers, or that he keeps trying to leech people from other PokeTubers who have much bigger fanbases than he does because ultimately he knows his WORLD CHAMP title is meaningless in the big picture.

Well that's their choice. They earned the right to call themselves world champions, because the title may transfer year to year but the winners of a year are still entitled to their achievments. Theres a military saying "you needn't respect the man, just the rank." And I think it holds true here too.
But this is the crux of the matter. He slaps "world champ" not to brag, but to shill. I think it's slightly better but still pretty low. I wonder if he makes that much cash, because he shills not just for views but merch as well. I frankly think he's fallen into the trap of content creators scrambling to play the youtube/twitch game optimally, problem is that well has gone dry quite some time ago.

Give him an interesting number of possible roles to fill.
If he functions right Im thinking of something like this. Nobody would look twice at a "Rotom" with Nasty Plot, and a non intimidating "Arcenine" leading with a Whimsicott screams Justi-Beat so I can also take advantage of the opponent's preconceived assumptions.

The worst part is that he cheated to get that championship.
He injected a Raichu in an illegal Pokeball, which would've given his opponents false information about what moves it could have.
His Raichu was in a Dream Ball, and it's impossible for a Raichu to have Endeavor in anything other than a Cherish Ball, so the Dream Ball would signal to his opponent that he doesn't have Endeavor.

I see. It's not fair to say it wouldn't give a competitive advantage/disadvantage because if you saw the ball and knew what event Raichu had, you'd know a Raichu in a dream ball would not have the event move. Players using mechanics to read more beyond base assumptions are really important, this is why chip from weather or ability procting order is important to watch. So to fake out the enemy with a Pokemon that is impossible to obtain in the ball/move combination would wrongfully take advantage of it.
