- Implement level scaling for trainer/gym battles based on how many badges you have (this is actually in line with previously established canon)
- Bring back the Vs. Seeker so that you can rematch trainers and not worry about running out of experience/money if you beat every trainer before your first badge.
- Wild Pokemon levels also scale based on your number of gym badges. Introduce some sort of repel variants so you can attract weaker or stronger Pokemon if you want. Wild Pokemon that are over a certain level can't be caught unless you have enough gym badges.
- Stick to the general idea of towns being connected by routes/caves, but make routes/areas more open rather than just being corridors with a start and end. One area can connect multiple towns together. Also remove the roadblocks that gate story progression.
- Connect major cities via public roads, trains, etc. so the player (and NPCs who aren't trainers) can reach any destination they like without a problem. Have shortcuts or optional areas open up after doing sidequests
- Have one gym for each type, but only 8 are required to join the Pokemon League. The player can choose any 8 gyms they like, allows for more variety on repeat playthroughs.
- Have the main villain subplot occur after you become champion. Avoids the issue of forcing the player through certain areas to progress the main story. The player can encounter the evil team doing lesser crime and resolve those issues during the afforementioned sidequests.
