Visiting friends islands is so, so, so, so absurdly cumbersome, it has a real "what the fuck, only Nintendo could fuck up online this badly" vibe

It will either not work or suck ass, just play any mmo and tell me if you'd like pokemon to become that. Only good games are singleplayer games, multiplayer games are only fun with friends. Optional cooperative and pvp in a private pokemon region with your friends would be cool, but it will never happen

I am not saying the game is not fun, I am saying that the online is fucking absurd, in a genuine "why would you do this" way. Like Nintendo clearly genuinely fucking wanted the system the way it is and I can't remotely understand why.

Ehh, they have their reasons, I'm sure. ACNH has other really weird design choices as well, particularly things that were added after launch. Like lowering spawn rates of rare bugs and making making money even more of a grind. Or adding an item liquidation system for the photo island, but not the islands where you're actually supposed to farm materials.

The reason is mostly that they want to string you on for as long as possible and keep you paying subscriptions, I guess.
