During the height of the pandemic, Japan was on lockdown, just like most countries. Then they temporarily lifted it when the new Pokemon collared shirts came out, while they lined up in droves like the sheep that they are.

Honestly, GF probably didn't even think much of it when they put apricorn balls in SM, just an easter egg in the 20th anniversary games. Then they added them as rewards for the global missions and realized that people go fucking ballistic over them. It's taken forever but I'm really glad we'll be able to craft apriballs again.
