In the anime, sometimes, in the games, barely. They get mentioned but are never actually seen. It's implied that most animals are extinct.

The pokemon world is where real-world animals don't exist (the few appearances of real world animals in earlier episodes, he says, is due to the animation staff not paying enough attention) so he wanted to have the third movie tackle this question. What happened to all the real world animals? Why are there real trees and flowers but not real animals? What is the difference between plant Pokemon and regular plants?

So Shudo's idea was that real animals used to exist but don't anymore, the artists/animators thought that they still existed, and ultimately, they were just retconned to have never existed at all.

Worldbuilding IS the reason they retconned.

Back then, they don't know Pokemon was going to be such a big franchise, so they just referenced the real world. Now, Pokemon has its own distinct world that's completely divorced from the real world.

They had to recon it as nae cunt thought it was going to last as long as it did (meaning they didn't bother holding as true to the universe GF created until they realised it was going to be a long-running franchise). Ishihara thought the franchise was going to die out after Gen II.

While Copperajah is the correct height for an average Indian elephant it is 1000lbs lighter than the lightest fully grown average.
This suggests either those feats of strength from the Gen1 dex are less impressive than they were or there WILL eventually be a regional variant in a region based on India or Southern China.

I dunno, the occasional real world connections just made it feel more familiar and comfy, kinda gave it a sort of nice balance with all the weird fantasy shit but now that its an isolated fantasy world it just feels a lot less comfy

Regular animals wouldn't just be food for Pokemon, they'd also have to compete with them for food. Animals would realistically be driven to extinction pretty quickly if they existed alongside Pokemon.

Plants though still have a niche in the world. Plant Pokemon are just that, Pokemon that are similar to plants. They're more like animals with some plant-like traits than actual plants.

That was only in the comics and cartoons. It was called Earth in earlier games, but now it's just called "Sonic's World". It's now mandated by SEGA that the planet remain unnamed.
