Why do some people say SwSh is an "unfinished mess"?

Is there an objective reason for this, aside from #Dexit?

Or is it just the typical "let's shit on the current game" circlejerk?

I didn't care about the dex cut at all but there are plenty of other ways in which the game felt unfinished - every house in Wyndon has the exact same interior, cities all have record stores you can't actually enter despite the addition of TRs, and all the implied threat in the last half of the story that serves to drive the plot along happens off-screen. As someone who enjoyed the game, I'll still be the first to say it needed another six months in the oven.

I mean I don't see how people got away with calling XY unfinished but not this when it pretty much has less content and postgame. SWSH also has a worse overworld (which is saying a lot since this is Kalos) and somehow a plot equally as bad.

But desu I wouldn't call it unfinished. More that Game Freak lowers the bar for newer games

As someone who has been playing through Ni no Kuni, I have to say that Pokemon Sword and Shield are extremely empty by comparison. Ni no Kuni's character animations are far superior, the environments are far richer, and there's just so much more to do. However, Ni no Kuni's battle system absolutely SUCKS, and its monsters are boring and unattractive.

If I had to choose between "fun game play but subpar visuals" versus "absolutely spectacular visuals but garbage game play", I'd choose the former every single time. Say what you want about the graphical inferiorities of Pokemon Sword and Shield, but for the time I was playing it, I actually enjoyed battling monsters. When I play a game, I want to play a game, not watch a movie.

I've not actually played SwSh, but I've watched some gameplay and read a lot of discussions about it. These are the main things I've heard:

>empty towns; locations look nice, but there's nothing to do
>empty routes; just pathways connecting the towns
>short caves
>reused animations from Gen 7 even though they'd cut out a lot of Pokémon
>lazy attack animations
>Pokémon in the wild area "pop in" very close to you, ruining the illusion that they actually roam around there
>lazy movement animations; Pokémon in the overworld spin in place to change direction
>a lot of the plot is handled by NPCs instead of you
>no postgame

There might be more, but that's all I can think of now. Again, I haven't played Gen 8, but I definitely believe that it was massively rushed in order to be on the shelves in time for Christmas. The cash grab is more important than giving fans a good game.

I don't know if I'd say unfinished, it just feels lacking. I actually don't hate SwSh, but like stuff like the dungeons not really being a thing or not having any postgame areas don't feel like a symptom of the game releasing before it was done, but more like not enough focus being put into those areas.

The reason not enough focus was put into those areas was precisely *because* the game had to be rushed. They had to prioritise the things that could be done to make a "complete" (though bare-bones) game with the requisite 8 gyms. That means not bothering with buildings that aren't relevant to the plot; putting no work into caves/routes (again, not essential to the plot); cutting moves/Pokémon/animations to save time; ignoring post-game to complete the main game etc.

Part of the issue there is that Game Freak has just ported the battle system from game to game with some tweaks along the way. Compare Xenoblade 2 to Xenoblade X or Xenoblade. Even though they have similar stats and gameplay concepts across all games (ie. auto-attacks, stability, Arts, cooldown, positioning), the battle system in each game feels totally different. It's not just bringing the same system over with some slight property alterations while adding some new ones and a gimmick button (Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax/Gigantamax).

So when I look at the stuff that's enjoyable about Pokémon like the battle system, how much of that enjoyment comes from the past 24 years? How much is truly unique to this game?

Just look at it. You can tell by playing.
Their new half-assed philosophy permeates the entire game. It's the same thing that caused them to drop the Battle Frontier - the defining feature of gen 3 from ORAS; the same thing that caused them to give you free heals after every battle in gen 7; it's a philosophy that's crystallized into a concentrated form of laziness. They've done the bare minimum they could get away with and it feels like it.

You never accidentally stumble upon a secret area because there ARE no secret areas. You never get surprised by any environmental storytelling or special events because there ARE none. It's entirely on rails. Maybe you have to play it to feel it, and maybe if you don't see it you don't "get" how you can "feel" game design. But it's unmistakeable.

I actually really appreciate XY, its problem was a bit too much Kanto pandering and the story kind of fizzled out where it actually had good potential. The climax with Xerneas/Yveltal is just nothing. But lots of other things are very high quality, like the Elite Four. It's a shame.

Every single Pokemon game rewards you 100% with items that are only useful if you plan to raise monsters, with the bulk of those techniques and items only being recquired for multiplayer.

It is not a "large single player game", and has never ever ever been. Single Player campaigns has always been basically a tutorial for kids on how shit works before they can get to the meat of the content which is using all that shit to challenge yourself against other players.

The thing with Pokemon is that you are basically required to beat the campaign if you want to do the multiplayer. With Splatoon, on the other hand, you can just jump right into the multiplayer and never even touch the campaign.

Game freak doesn't want you to play the game too much, because they have to sell you another game next year

Let's say, Battle frontier was in ORAS, increasing by a lot it's life duration, who would have bought Sun and Moon then ? Especially since Sun and Moon wouldn't even have the amount of postgame ORAS would have

So pokemon marketing is like a drug, they give you a game, but it's actually not quite enough to pleasure your pokemon fix, so you feel the need to buy the next one the following year, hoping for more content.

That's why they keep removing content and adding some other bit each game really.

They purposely release incomplete game so you can have the need to buy the next one

Game Freak will NEVER improve or make their game more complete, because first you wouldn't feel the urge to buy another game right away, and second they would have to make effort to make the next game better.

With Game freak politic, they never have to do better each game, they just keep teasing their player base with half games

There is no way these feel more finished than those
I liked swsh well enough, but it very much feels like two half finished games stitched together
the wild area is terribly integrated into the campaign and generally devoid of anything interesting
the campaign itself has all sorts of pacing issues and the inability to turn exp share off keeps you from staying in one place too long and realizing just how sparse the region is

Main game is short and the the post game is almost non-existant.
Here's what I'd add/change "with in reason"
>Final Rival battle against hop can be rematched in the post game daily.
>Gym leaders/rivals can be AI raid trainers in the post game
>Gym leaders show up in the battle tower.
>Final rival battle in the post game gets a special remix.
>Make battle tower not "Press dynamax to win."
Little, low effort things that make the game's world more interesting and happening.

Bullshit, XY fell apart after the 3rd gym, Ohmori coded the trials into SM at the last minute solo. Meanwhile, SS felt a complete experience, regardless of your personal opinion of the story told.
Of course the elephant in the room is the dexcut - without it, I've no doubt SS would have turned out like XY/SM in some form but restricting the number of pokémon they dealt with for SS helped the rest of the game not suffer the issues endemic in the previous paired new Gen games.

Just look at the DLC to find your answer. The DLC has a controllable camera in almost all areas, its “Wilde Areas” are much more well-thought out and seem more organic with placement of Pokémon.

Compare that to the poorly designed, Wild Area in the base game where weather changes on a dime and Pokémon that should have large, impactful habitats get like two steps worth of space. Combine this with the fact that you can’t control the camera in all of the towns and it becomes obvious that they didn’t get to make the Wild Area what they envisioned.

At least Diamond and Pearl had full content all the way through. Yeah, the overworld textures are somewhat generic and the engine is slow, but they're so much more fleshed out than Ruby and Sapphire and actually feel like complete games.

No, I did not start with them. I played every Gen up through V, and I played Ruby at age 9 and Diamond as a teenager, so you'd think I'd be more nostalgic for Gen III.

Because it is. This is evident from places like towns with no enterable buildings besides the gym, the tiny routes, how the final gym is a single room with no puzzle etc. It's the shortest game to beat on an average playthrough. Aside from that there is also the unpolished viduals and choppy animation and even the music feels half hearted at times. It's not a finished game.

Aside from so many towns having inaccessible buildings for no reason. I don’t see the argument. I clocked in at 24 hours, which is the usual time I took to beat the previous titles. Only games I’ve beaten quicker than that are Yellow, Soul Silver and Y.

In terms of what I think the game should have for more content is the return of the battle subway. I think there are even NPCs who talk about it. The game feels lacking in side content/mini games

RS feel like complete games. It doesn't have a lot but everything in it is complete and fleshed out. DP has a bunch of shit in it but they couldn't get, the engine, the core of the game right. Sinnoh is a great region shoved in a shit game.
I could never defend RS when compared to any other game except DP. They are the literal worst.

Is it unfinished, well it's functional whether it's up to what the developers intended or not we'll probably never know but it is at least to some degree finished. It's certainly unpolished though, they evidently never settled on an artstyle given some of the game's textures.

Although given this was the third game they put out this year (and that's not even accounting the fact that 2017 and 2018 had two releases each as well) the game is definitely rushed, the plots barely fit together and the game has noticeably less going on in terms of side content than previous entries including LGPE.

I have a running theory that partway through development, someone told GF to stop what they were doing and change a lot of details about the game because given certain elements in the game I suspect;
- Originally the main plot centralized around Sonia and discovering the truth of the past
- Sordward & Shielbert (who were probably less ridiculously named and designed originally) were to be the original villains and hence Zacian and Zamazenta as box legendaries would make more sense since they're more critical to the brothers plot.
- From the above, Marnie and the state of Spikemuth would make a lot more sense if it was the royal family basically dissuading people from visiting the town. Bede would also fit well as being a fanatic of the royal family akin to real life, especially given the fans that appear to protect Sordward & Shielbert in the post-game.
- Dynamaxing seems to be more an evolution of Totem Battles and was probably meant to be something only the enemy Pokemon could do, but either due to the backlash from Totem Battles in Gen VII or just finding the battles uninteresting they changed it so Dynamaxing became a blend of Megas and Z-Moves.

Literally just look at the conversation scene with Rose and Leon at the tower and tell me this isn't rushed. They didn't have enough time to animate a cutscene between the two and used still images, a first for the franchise. On top of this, the graphical inconsistencies with cities and towns to the wild area are very apparent.

Ngl, this game made me miss the battle tree. It has a difficulty that scales as you climb it and beat trainers, and bosses in the form of other champions and past characters, all using megas, z-moves, and legendaries.

Despite enjoying ss multiplayer, I go back to ultra sun often to play the battle tree and watch my ash greninja and mega pokemon kick ass. It's a nice stress reliever that really should be in ss. They really fucked up by leaving it out.

They can't keep up with the yearly drops. Remakes are easier since all the conceptualization for the most part is already done, but they're definitely getting to the point where they can't handle the workload of churning out an entirely new game that's fleshed out. I don't know why they can't resort to more outsourcing.

Yeah, it's giving plenty of signs of being rushed. Before gen 8 there were no songs that had bad loops, even among the generations where it used streamed audio instead of sequenced audio.

These are the big giveaways for me. If it looked consistently shitty, that's simply bad direction or lack of talent. But if you've got some parts that are amazing and others that very clearly in a lower standard, that's a dead giveaway there simply wasn't time to give a consistent level of polish to every part, usually due to a failure on management's part.

Because the "shitty areas" are all areas with a very clear reasoning why they look like shit: see The Wild Area, because it's alot more hardware intensive, and the route with the stairs and the rocky walls, because it has more complex geometry to deal with. Also the "good animations" are just signature moves, like usual.

1) cutscene animations at the early parts of the game are noticeably higher quality than later (see starter introduction vs moonwalking doggo)

2) Early gyms have more interesting puzzles than later gyms (the gym 7 hallway and the gym 8 room)

3) Character motivations (particularly Roses) don't make sense (why does he fight you after eternatus escapes? What does he have to gain by delaying/stopping you?)

4) Some NPC models are unfinished (backpacker f's mouth has no teeth/inside. Is just a red spot)

5) Character dialogue doesn't always match character animations (when you beat a trainer, they'll often react in an extreme manner while the dialogue is comparatively mild)

6) Bugs and glitches (e.g. the fact that square shinies are sometimes more common than regular shinies when they're supposed to always be rarer)

I could go on, but the whole thing gives off the feeling that quality started to fall off as they ran out of time.
