Why do people call caves "dungeons" when they're just re-skinned routes?

Dungeon implies something harder than a normal route or with extra mechanics.

it's not like other dungeons like in the old Final Fantasy games etc. weren't just a bunch of rooms with some occasional traps as well

Define increased difficulty. Higher levels? More trainers? Wild encounter species have higher BST compared to routes?

Not her but the only example I can thik of is people calling the Cerulean Cave the Unknown Dungeon. It's also the closest a cave can get to a dungeon in pokemon outside of the Seafoam Islands, so you might as well call it one.
